Different Parts of a Plant

A plant is made up of different parts that work together to support its growth and survival. These parts can be seen above and below the soil.

The following are the main parts of a plant:

  1. Root
  2. Stem (shoot)
  3. Leaves
  4. Flowers
  5. Fruits and Seeds
Functions of the Shoot

The shoot includes the stem, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits. It grows upward and supports the plant.

The following are the functions of the shoot:

  1. It supports leaves, flowers, and fruits.
  2. It transports water and nutrients from the roots to other parts of the plant.
  3. It transports manufactured food from leaves to other parts of the plant.
  4. It helps in reproduction through flowers and fruits.
Functions of the Leaves

Leaves are usually green and flat parts of the plant that grow on the stem or branches.

The following are the functions of the leaves:

  1. They manufacture food for the plant through photosynthesis.
  2. They allow exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide).
  3. They help to regulate water loss through transpiration.
Functions of the Roots

Roots grow downward into the soil and help to anchor the plant.

The following are the functions of the roots:

  1. They anchor the plant firmly in the soil.
  2. They absorb water and mineral salts from the soil.
  3. Some roots store food for the plant (e.g. carrot, cassava).
Functions of the Flowers

Flowers are the reproductive organs of the plant, usually colorful and attractive.

The following are the functions of the flowers:

  1. They produce pollen and ovules for reproduction.
  2. They attract insects for pollination.
  3. They develop into fruits and seeds after fertilization.
