Lesson Content/Board Summary

Al-Hadith: Hadith 21 of Al-Nawawi

Introduction to Hadith

Hadith (plural: Ahadith) refers to the sayings, actions, and approvals of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). It is the second primary source of Islamic law after the Qur’an. Imam Al-Nawawi compiled a collection of 42 important Hadith, known as “The Forty Hadith of Al-Nawawi,” which cover essential aspects of Islam.

On the authority of Abu ‘Amr – and he is also called Abu ‘Amrah – Sufyan bin ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, tell me a statement about Islam about which I will not ask anyone else after you.’ He said: ‘Say: “I believe in Allah,” and then be steadfast (upon that).’” (Recorded by Muslim)

Explanation of Hadith 21

This Hadith emphasizes two fundamental principles of Islam:

  • Belief in Allah: The foundation of Islam is absolute belief in Allah (SWT) as the One God, without partners or equals. This belief must be sincere and unwavering.
  • Steadfastness (Istiqamah): After declaring belief, a Muslim must be steadfast in adhering to the commands of Allah and the teachings of Islam. This means consistently performing good deeds, avoiding sins, and remaining firm on the path of righteousness, even in challenging times.

Lessons Learnt from Hadith 21

The following are key lessons from Hadith 21:

  • The Primacy of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah): Belief in Allah is the core of a Muslim’s faith.
  • Importance of Consistency: True faith requires continuous effort and adherence to Islamic principles, not just a one-time declaration.
  • Guidance for a Complete Life: The Hadith provides a concise yet comprehensive guide for living a Muslim life – belief followed by consistent righteous action.
  • Simplicity of Islam: While Islam is vast, its essence can be summarized in these two profound principles.
  • Avoiding Extremes: Steadfastness implies moderation and balance in religious practice, avoiding both negligence and excessive zeal.
  • Patience and Perseverance: Maintaining steadfastness often requires patience in trials and perseverance in worship and good deeds.
