Lesson Content/Board Summary

Hadith 18 of Al-Nawawi

Introduction to Hadith and Al-Nawawi’s Collection

Hadith refers to the sayings, actions, and approvals of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). It is the second primary source of Islamic law after the Qur’an.

Imam Al-Nawawi (d. 676 AH/1277 CE) compiled a famous collection of “Forty Hadith” (actually 42), which are widely studied due to their comprehensive coverage of fundamental Islamic principles. Hadith 18 is one of these important narrations.

Text and Translation of Hadith 18

(The teacher will write the Arabic text of Hadith 18 on the board)

On the authority of Abu Dharr Jundub ibn Junadah, and Abu Abdur-Rahman Muadh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Fear Allah wherever you are, and follow up a bad deed with a good one it will wipe it out, and behave towards people with good character.”

(Related by At-Tirmidhi, who said it was a good and sound Hadith)

Explanation of Hadith 18

This Hadith provides three profound pieces of advice for a Muslim’s life:

1. “Fear Allah wherever you are (Ittaqillah haithuma kunta)”

  • This means to be conscious of Allah (Taqwa) in all situations, whether in public or private. It involves obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions out of reverence and love for Him.
  • Example: A Muslim should avoid cheating in exams, lying, or backbiting, even when no one else is watching, because they know Allah is always observing.

2. “And follow up a bad deed with a good one it will wipe it out (wa atbi’is-sayyi’atal-hasanata tamhuha)”

  • This teaches the importance of repentance and seeking forgiveness immediately after committing a sin. A good deed performed with sincerity can nullify the negative impact of a bad deed.
  • Example: If someone gossips about another, they should sincerely regret it, ask Allah for forgiveness, and then do a good deed like giving charity, helping someone, or making du’a for the person they wronged (and apologize to the person if possible).

3. “And behave towards people with good character (wa khaliqin-naasa bi khuluqin hasanin)”

  • This emphasizes the significance of having excellent manners (Ihsan) and dealing with all people, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, with kindness, respect, honesty, patience, and justice.
  • Example: Being polite, keeping promises, helping those in need, smiling, forgiving others, and refraining from arguments or insults are all aspects of good character.

Lessons Learnt from Hadith 18

  • The importance of Taqwa (piety and Allah-consciousness) in all aspects of life.
  • Encouragement for immediate repentance and seeking Allah’s forgiveness after committing sins.
  • Good deeds performed sincerely have the power to erase the effects of bad deeds.
  • The profound significance of having excellent character (Akhlaq Hasanah) in dealings with all human beings.
  • Islam emphasizes the balance between a Muslim’s relationship with Allah (Huquq Allah) and their relationship with fellow human beings (Huquq al-Ibad).
