Lesson Content/Board Summary

Al-Hadith: Hadith 20 of Al-Nawawi

Introduction to Hadith 20

Hadith 20 from Imam Al-Nawawi’s collection of forty Hadith emphasizes the concept of ‘Haya’ (shame or modesty) as a core principle of faith and a teaching from earlier prophets. It serves as a strong deterrent against evil actions.

Translation of Hadith 20

On the authority of Abu Mas’ud ‘Uqbah bin ‘Amr al-Ansari al-Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Indeed, from what the people have attained from the words of the previous prophets is: If you feel no shame, then do whatever you wish.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari)

Explanation of Hadith 20

This Hadith highlights the importance of ‘Haya’ (shame, modesty, or integrity) in a person’s life. The statement “If you feel no shame, then do whatever you wish” is not a permission to do evil, but a strong warning. It means that if a person loses their sense of shame, they lose their moral compass and will not hesitate to commit any wrongdoing, as there is no internal barrier to stop them. ‘Haya’ acts as an inner moral restraint that prevents one from engaging in disgraceful acts and encourages virtuous behaviour. It is a fundamental aspect of faith that has been emphasized in all divine messages.

Lessons Learnt from Hadith 20

The following are important lessons from Hadith 20:

  • Haya’ (shame or modesty) is an integral part of faith and character.
  • A lack of shame leads to moral degradation and bad behaviour.
  • The principle of modesty and good character has been a consistent teaching across all prophets.
  • Muslims should always exhibit shame and modesty in their actions, words, and outward appearance.
  • Haya’ is a virtue that guides individuals towards righteousness and away from sin, protecting them from evil.
