Lesson Content/Board Summary
Al-Hadith: Hadith 19 of Al-Nawawi
Introduction to Hadith
A Hadith is a collection of traditions containing sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), or descriptions of his actions and approvals. It serves as a major source of religious law and moral guidance in Islam.
Text of Hadith 19 of Al-Nawawi
Translation of Hadith 19
On the authority of Abu Dharr Jundub ibn Junadah, and Abu Abdur-Rahman Muadh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Have taqwa (fear/awareness) of Allah wherever you may be, and follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out, and behave towards the people with a good character.” (Reported by At-Tirmidhi, who said it was a good Hadith)
Explanation of Hadith 19
This Hadith contains three crucial pieces of advice for a Muslim’s life:
- Have Taqwa of Allah wherever you may be: Taqwa means being conscious of Allah, fearing Him, and being aware of His presence at all times, whether in public or private. It guides a Muslim to always do what is right and avoid what is wrong.
- Follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out: This teaches the importance of repentance and seeking forgiveness. If a person commits a sin, they should immediately perform a good deed, such as praying, giving charity, asking for forgiveness, or helping someone, to nullify the effect of the bad deed.
- Behave towards the people with a good character: This emphasizes the importance of good manners, kindness, honesty, and justice in all interactions with others. A Muslim should always treat people with respect, fairness, and compassion.
