Lesson Content/Board Summary

Hadith

Introduction to Hadith

Hadith are the sayings, actions, or tacit approvals of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They serve as the second primary source of Islamic law after the Qur’an, providing guidance and explanations for various aspects of a Muslim’s life.

Hadith 13 of Al-Nawawi

Arabic Text (Transliteration): La yu’minu ahadukum hatta yuhibba li-akhihi ma yuhibbu li-nafsihi.

English Translation: “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” (Recorded by Imam Bukhari and Muslim)

Explanation: This Hadith emphasizes the importance of empathy, genuine concern, and brotherhood in Islam. It teaches that true faith is incomplete if a person does not wish good for others, just as they wish for themselves. It promotes altruism and selfless love within the Muslim community and humanity at large.

The following are lessons learnt from Hadith 13:

  • It highlights the importance of true faith and its connection to good character and social responsibility.
  • It promotes love, empathy, and brotherhood among Muslims.
  • It encourages treating others as one would wish to be treated, fostering fairness and compassion.
  • It discourages selfishness, hatred, envy, and ill-will towards others.

Hadith 14 of Al-Nawawi

Arabic Text (Transliteration): La yahillu damu imri’in Muslimin illa bi-ihda thalath: ath-thayyib az-zani, wa n-nafs bi n-nafs, wa t-tariku li-dinihi al-mufariqu li-l-jama’ah.

English Translation: “It is not lawful to shed the blood of a Muslim except for one of three reasons: the married adulterer, a life for a life, and one who forsakes his religion and abandons the community.” (Recorded by Imam Bukhari and Muslim)

Explanation: This Hadith highlights the sanctity of human life, especially that of a Muslim, in Islam. It establishes strict legal conditions under which capital punishment may be applied. It is crucial to understand that these are matters for judicial judgment by an established Islamic court, not for individual action or vigilantism. The Hadith underscores the high value placed on life and the severe consequences for grave crimes within an Islamic legal framework.

The following are lessons learnt from Hadith 14:

  • It emphasizes the high value and sanctity of human life in Islam.
  • It strictly prohibits unlawful killing and aggression.
  • It teaches that justice must be administered by legitimate authority (Islamic courts) and not by individuals.
  • It outlines the severe consequences for certain grave crimes according to Islamic law, which are only applicable through due legal process.
  • It reinforces the importance of adhering to the Muslim community and its principles.
