Hadith 15 of Al-Nawawi: Good Character and Conduct

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whosoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent; and whosoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honour his neighbour; and whosoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honour his guest.”

Meaning of the Hadith

This Hadith teaches three important principles for a Muslim who truly believes in Allah and the Day of Judgment. These principles are: controlling one’s speech, being kind and respectful to neighbours, and showing generosity and hospitality to guests.

Explanation of the Hadith

  • Belief in Allah and the Last Day: This phrase emphasizes that these actions are not optional but are integral parts of a Muslim’s faith. True faith should manifest in good deeds and behaviour.
  • Speaking Good or Remaining Silent: This refers to the importance of guarding one’s tongue. A Muslim should only speak words that are beneficial, truthful, kind, and productive. If one cannot speak good, it is better to remain silent to avoid gossip, slander, backbiting, or hurtful words.
  • Honouring One’s Neighbour: This highlights the rights and importance of neighbours in Islam. Honouring a neighbour means treating them with kindness, respect, helping them when needed, and avoiding anything that might cause them harm or inconvenience, regardless of their faith.
  • Honouring One’s Guest: This emphasizes the virtue of hospitality. A Muslim should welcome guests warmly, offer them food and drink, and ensure their comfort. This act strengthens social bonds and reflects generosity.

Lessons Learnt from Hadith 15

The following are important lessons learnt from Hadith 15:

  • The importance of sincere belief in Allah and the Last Day as a foundation for good deeds.
  • The need to control one’s tongue and speak only that which is good.
  • The virtue of silence when one has nothing good or beneficial to say.
  • The significance of good neighbourly relations in Islam.
  • The obligation to treat neighbours with kindness, respect, and assistance.
  • The importance of hospitality and generosity towards guests.
  • These actions are signs of strong faith and contribute to a harmonious society.
