Short History and Contributions of Imam Shafil
Brief Biography of Imam Shafil
Imam Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi’i, commonly known as Imam Shafil, was a prominent Islamic scholar, jurist, and theologian. He was born in Gaza, Palestine, in 767 CE (150 AH) and passed away in Egypt in 820 CE (204 AH). He belonged to the Quraysh tribe, the same tribe as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Imam Shafil memorized the entire Quran at a young age and extensively studied Hadith and Islamic jurisprudence. He traveled widely to acquire knowledge, learning from many famous scholars of his time, including Imam Malik.
Contributions of Imam Shafil to Islam
The following are some of Imam Shafil’s significant contributions to the development of Islam:
- He was the founder of the Shafi’i school (madhhab) of Islamic jurisprudence, which is one of the four main Sunni schools of law.
- He wrote numerous books, including “Al-Risala” (The Message), which is considered a foundational text in Islamic legal theory (Usul al-Fiqh).
- He emphasized the importance of using both the Quran and the Sunnah (teachings and practices of Prophet Muhammad) as primary sources of Islamic law.
- He played a vital role in systematizing Islamic law, providing a clear methodology for deriving legal rulings.
- His teachings helped to bridge the gap between different schools of thought during his time, promoting unity among Muslims.

Suratul Yasin is the 36th chapter of the Holy Quran, often referred to as “the heart of the Quran.”
- Verse 1 (Ya-Sin): These are disconnected letters (Huruf al-Muqatta’at) whose exact meaning is known only to Allah. They serve as an introduction to the Quran’s miraculous nature.
- Verse 2 (Wal-Qur’anil-Hakeem): “By the Wise Quran.” Allah swears by the Quran, which is full of wisdom, to affirm its truth and divine origin.
- Verse 3 (Innaka laminal Mursaleen): “Indeed, you (O Muhammad) are among the messengers.” This verse directly affirms the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
- Verse 4 (Ala Siratim Mustaqeem): “On a straight path.” This indicates that Prophet Muhammad’s message and guidance lead to the correct way of life, Islam.
- Verse 5 (Tanzeelal ‘Azeezir-Raheem): “A revelation from the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.” This verse states that the Quran is a divine revelation from Allah, who possesses immense power and boundless mercy.
