Lesson Content/Board Summary
PURPOSE OF SADAQA (CHARITY)
What is Sadaqa?
Sadaqa is a voluntary act of charity given by Muslims to those in need, purely for the sake of Allah (SWT). Unlike Zakat, Sadaqa is not compulsory and can be given at any time, in any amount, and to anyone deserving.
Purpose of Sadaqa
The following are the main purposes of giving Sadaqa:
- To seek the pleasure and reward of Allah (SWT).
- To help the poor, needy, and less fortunate members of society.
- To purify one’s wealth and remove any impurities.
- To show gratitude to Allah (SWT) for His blessings.
- To strengthen community bonds and foster a sense of brotherhood/sisterhood.
- To earn continuous rewards (Sadaqa Jariyah) even after death, if the charity has lasting benefit.
- To show compassion and mercy to others.
Circumstances for Giving Sadaqa
Sadaqa can be given in various circumstances, including:
- To provide food, shelter, or clothing for the poor and destitute.
- To support orphans, widows, and the elderly.
- To assist travelers who are stranded or in need.
- During times of natural disasters or calamities to help affected communities.
- To contribute to the construction or maintenance of mosques, schools, hospitals, or other public welfare projects.
- To sponsor education for students who cannot afford it.
- To pay off debts for those who are genuinely unable to do so.
- Any time a Muslim wishes to gain rewards from Allah (SWT) and help others.
