Lessons from the Role of Women in Early Islam
Khadijah (R.A.): The First Believer and Supporter of Islam
Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (R.A.) was a noble and wealthy businesswoman from the Quraysh tribe in Makkah. She was known for her intelligence, honesty, and excellent character even before the advent of Islam. She was the first wife of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his most devoted supporter.
Background History of Khadijah (R.A.)
Khadijah (R.A.) was born in Makkah around 555 CE. She came from a distinguished family and inherited a successful trading business. She was highly respected for her integrity and sharp business skills. Before her marriage to Prophet Muhammad (SAW), she had been married twice and had children.
Marriage to Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
Khadijah (R.A.) employed Prophet Muhammad (SAW), who was then known as Al-Amin (the trustworthy), to manage her trading caravans. Impressed by his honesty, integrity, and excellent character, she proposed marriage to him. They married when Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was 25 years old and Khadijah (R.A.) was 40 years old. Their marriage was blessed with children, including Fatima (R.A.).
Khadijah’s Role and Support in Early Islam
Khadijah (R.A.) played a vital role in the early days of Islam. She was the first person to believe in Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) prophethood when he received the first revelation in Cave Hira. Her support was immense:
- Comfort and Reassurance: When Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was scared and confused after receiving the first revelation, Khadijah (R.A.) comforted him and assured him of Allah’s protection.
- Financial Support: She used her wealth to support Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the early Muslim community, especially during times of boycott and hardship.
- Moral Support: She was a constant source of encouragement and strength for the Prophet (SAW) during the challenging period of establishing Islam.
- First Believer: She was the first person to accept Islam, setting an example of faith and submission.
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) loved and respected Khadijah (R.A.) deeply throughout his life, even after her death. Her unwavering faith and support were fundamental to the early success of Islam.
