Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the last prophet sent by Allah to guide mankind. He was born in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, and his mission was to teach people about Islam and the oneness of Allah. He is a role model for all Muslims.
His Call to Prophethood
Before his prophethood, Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) used to go to a cave called Hira, near Makkah, to meditate and think about Allah. When he was 40 years old, during one of his meditations, Angel Jibril (Gabriel) appeared to him. Angel Jibril commanded him to “Read!” This event marked the beginning of his prophethood and the revelation of the Holy Qur’an.
Persecution by the Makkans
When Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) started preaching Islam and the worship of one Allah, many people in Makkah, who worshipped idols, did not accept his message. They began to persecute him and his followers. The following are some ways they persecuted them:
- They mocked and insulted the Prophet and his companions.
- They physically harmed some of the early Muslims.
- They boycotted the Muslims, stopping trade and marriage with them.
- They tried to stop people from listening to the Prophet’s message.
- They tortured slaves who accepted Islam.
