Lesson Content/Board Summary
Obedience to Parents
Who are Parents?
Parents are the people who gave birth to us and are responsible for our upbringing. They guide us, feed us, clothe us, educate us, and protect us. They are a great blessing from Allah (SWT).
Duties of Children Towards Parents in Islam
In Islam, Allah (SWT) has commanded children to treat their parents with great respect and kindness. Some of these duties include:
- Treating them with kindness and compassion.
- Speaking to them gently and respectfully, never using harsh words.
- Lowering our wing of humility to them.
- Obeying them in all matters that do not contradict Allah’s commands.
- Taking care of them, especially in their old age.
- Praying for them (forgiveness, mercy, and blessings).
- Not saying “Uff” or showing any sign of displeasure.
Qur’anic Reference:
Allah (SWT) says in Surah Al-Isra (Chapter 17), verses 23-24:
“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while with you], say not to them [even] ‘uff,’ nor repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they nurtured me when I was small.'”
Examples of Demonstrating Obedience to Parents
Children can show their obedience to parents in many practical ways:
- Listening carefully when they speak.
- Helping with household chores without being asked.
- Running errands for them.
- Greeting them respectfully.
- Not interrupting them when they are talking.
- Seeking their permission before going out or doing certain things.
- Sharing what you have with them.
- Avoiding arguments or disrespectful behavior.
