Lesson Content/Board Summary

HOUSEHOLD LAUNDRY

Definition of Laundering

Laundering is the process of washing, cleaning, and caring for textile articles such as clothing, linen, and other fabrics, to remove dirt, stains, and odours, and to maintain their appearance and hygiene.

Importance of Laundering

The following are reasons why laundering is important:

  • It helps to maintain personal hygiene by removing dirt and sweat from clothes.
  • It helps to preserve the appearance and prolong the lifespan of garments.
  • It prevents the spread of germs and diseases.
  • It removes unpleasant odours from fabrics.
  • It makes clothes comfortable and pleasant to wear.

Preparation for Washing

Proper preparation for washing helps to protect clothes and achieve better cleaning results. The steps include:

  • Sorting: Separating clothes based on colour (whites, lights, darks), fabric type (delicate, heavy), and degree of dirtiness. This prevents colour bleeding and damage to delicate items.
  • Mending: Repairing minor damages like loose buttons, torn seams, or small holes before washing. Washing damaged garments can worsen the damage.
  • Steeping: Soaking heavily soiled or stained clothes in water, sometimes with detergent, for a period before washing. This helps to loosen dirt and stains, making them easier to remove.

Hand Washing Methods

Hand washing is suitable for delicate garments or when machine washing is not available. Common methods include:

  • Friction: Rubbing two parts of the fabric together, or rubbing the fabric against a washboard, to dislodge dirt. This method is effective for heavily soiled areas.
  • Kneading: Gently pressing and squeezing the fabric repeatedly in soapy water. This action helps the water and detergent penetrate the fibres and release dirt without causing damage.
  • Squeezing: Pressing water and detergent through the fabric, often used for delicate items that cannot withstand rubbing. The fabric is gently compressed and released to force water through.

Other Laundry Processes

These processes are often used after washing to enhance the appearance or hygiene of fabrics:

  • Bleaching: Using chemical agents to whiten fabrics or remove stubborn stains. Bleach should be used carefully as it can damage certain fabrics or cause discolouration.
  • Blueing: Adding a small amount of blue dye to the final rinse water for white fabrics. This counteracts any yellowish tint that develops over time, making whites appear brighter and whiter.

Care Label Symbols and Water Temperature Signs

Care labels provide instructions on how to properly care for a garment. Interpreting these symbols helps prevent damage to clothes. They cover different aspects of laundry care:

  • Washing Symbols: Indicate whether an item can be machine washed, hand washed, or dry cleaned, and the recommended water temperature (e.g., tub with water, numbers for temperature, or dots).
  • Bleaching Symbols: Indicate whether bleach can be used (e.g., triangle symbol).
  • Drying Symbols: Show how to dry the garment (e.g., square with circle for tumble dry, lines for line dry).
  • Ironing Symbols: Provide guidance on ironing temperature (e.g., iron symbol with dots indicating heat level).
  • Dry Cleaning Symbols: Indicate if professional dry cleaning is required (e.g., circle symbol).

Water temperature signs are often represented by dots inside the washing tub symbol, where one dot means cold, two dots warm, and three dots hot water.
