Definition of Stain Removal
Stain removal is the process of eliminating unwanted marks, spots, or discolorations from fabrics or other surfaces.
Stain Removing Agents

- Bleaches: Such as chlorine bleach (for white cottons) and oxygen bleach (for colours).
- Solvents: Like kerosene, petrol, methylated spirit, or commercial dry-cleaning fluid for grease-based stains.
- Acids: Such as lemon juice or vinegar for rust or some fruit stains.
- Alkalis: Like baking soda for some acidic stains.
- Salt: Often used with cold water for fresh blood stains.
- Glycerine: Can help loosen old or sugary stains.
General Guidelines for Removing Stains
The following are general guidelines to follow when removing stains:
- Act Promptly: Remove stains as soon as possible, as fresh stains are easier to remove.
- Identify Stain and Fabric: Determine the type of stain and the fabric content to choose the appropriate remover.
- Test First: Always test the stain remover on an inconspicuous area of the fabric to check for colourfastness.
- Work from Outside In: Apply the remover from the outer edge of the stain towards the centre to prevent spreading.
- Dab, Don’t Rub: Use a dabbing or blotting motion with a clean cloth to lift the stain, avoiding harsh rubbing which can damage fabric.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse the treated area completely to remove all traces of the stain remover.
- Avoid Heat: Do not iron or apply heat to a stained fabric until the stain is completely removed, as heat can set the stain.
Removal of Specific Stains
Fruit Juice Stains
The following are steps to remove fruit juice stains:
- Rinse the stained area immediately with cold water from the back of the fabric.
- Soak the fabric in warm water with a suitable detergent for about 30 minutes.
- For stubborn stains, apply lemon juice and expose the fabric to sunlight, or use a mild oxygen bleach if suitable for the fabric.
- Rinse thoroughly.
Blood Stains
The following are steps to remove blood stains:
- Rinse fresh blood stains immediately with cold water. Hot water will set the stain.
- Soak the stained area in cold salty water or a solution of enzyme pre-soak for several hours.
