What is Silk?

Silk is a natural protein fibre produced by certain insect larvae to form cocoons. The most well-known type of silk is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori).

Manufacturing Process of Silk

The manufacturing process of silk, also known as sericulture, involves several stages:

  • Sericulture: This is the rearing of silkworms for the production of raw silk. Silkworms feed on mulberry leaves.
  • Cocoon Formation: After about 30-35 days, silkworms spin cocoons around themselves by secreting a liquid protein that hardens on contact with air.
  • Stifling: The cocoons are heated to kill the pupae inside before they hatch, which would break the silk filaments.
  • Reeling: Cocoons are softened in hot water, and the continuous silk filament from several cocoons is unwound and twisted together to form a single strand of raw silk.
  • Degumming: The raw silk is boiled in soap and water to remove sericin (a gummy substance), making the silk soft and lustrous.
  • Spinning/Weaving: The degummed silk threads are then spun into yarn and woven into fabric.
