What is Linen?

Manufacturing Process of Linen Fibre

The manufacturing of linen fibre involves several stages:

  • Cultivation and Harvesting: Flax plants are grown and harvested, usually by pulling them from the ground to preserve the full length of the fibres.
  • Retting: This is a process of rotting away the woody stem to separate the fibres. Retting can be done by dew (leaving plants in a field), water (submerging in tanks), or chemicals.
  • Scutching: The dried retted stalks are crushed to break the woody parts, which are then scraped away to reveal the long bast fibres.
  • Hackling (Combing): The fibres are combed to separate short fibres (tow) from long, fine fibres (line) and to align them parallel.
  • Spinning: The hackled fibres are spun into yarn, which is then woven or knitted into linen fabric.
