What are Artificial Fibres?

General Manufacturing Process of Artificial Fibres
The general process involves converting raw materials into a viscous liquid, which is then forced through tiny holes (spinnerets) to form continuous filaments. These filaments are then solidified and processed into yarn.
The following are the general steps:
- Preparation of polymer solution: Raw materials are chemically treated to form a polymer solution or melt.
- Extrusion (Spinning): The solution or melt is forced through a spinneret, which is a device with many small holes, to form continuous filaments.
- Solidification: The filaments solidify either by drying in air (dry spinning), by coagulation in a chemical bath (wet spinning), or by cooling (melt spinning).
- Drawing: The solidified fibres are stretched to align the polymer molecules, which improves their strength and other properties.
- Finishing: Fibres may undergo further treatments like crimping, cutting, or blending to prepare them for textile production.
Properties of Rayon
Rayon is a regenerated cellulose fibre, meaning it is made from purified cellulose (usually from wood pulp) that is chemically converted back into a fibre. It is often referred to as artificial silk.

- Drapes well.
- Weak when wet.

Properties of Nylon

- Resistant to most chemicals, mildew, and insects.

Properties of Polyester
Polyester is a synthetic fibre made from petroleum-based polymers. It is widely used in clothing and industrial applications.

- Wrinkle-resistant.
- Quick-drying due to low absorbency.
