Straight Lines (Horizontal and Vertical)

A straight line is a line that does not bend or curve. It is the shortest distance between two points.

Horizontal Lines:

These are straight lines that go from left to right, like the horizon. They are flat across.

Examples of objects with horizontal lines:

  • The top edge of a table
  • A sleeping ladder
  • The line where the sky meets the land (horizon)

Vertical Lines:

These are straight lines that go up and down, like a wall or a standing pole. They stand upright.

Drawing and Recording Length:

To draw a straight line, use a ruler and a pencil. To record its length, place the ruler along the line and read the measurement in centimetres (cm) or metres (m).

Curved Lines

A curved line is a line that changes direction smoothly without sharp angles. It is not straight.

Examples of curved lines:

  • Arc: A part of the circumference of a circle.
  • Semi-circle: Half of a circle.
  • Circle: A perfectly round shape where all points on the curve are the same distance from the center.

Examples of objects with curved lines:

Drawing Curved Lines:

Curved lines can be drawn freehand or by using tools like a compass for circles and semi-circles.

Forming Shapes and Objects
