Equivalent Fractions

What is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole. It shows how many parts we have out of the total number of equal parts that make up the whole.

  • The top number is called the numerator (the number of parts we have).
  • The bottom number is called the denominator (the total number of equal parts in the whole).

Dividing Objects into Halves

To divide an object into halves, we split it into two equal parts. Each part is called one half (1/2).

Example: If you cut an orange into two equal pieces, each piece is 1/2 of the orange.

Understanding Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions are fractions that represent the same value, even though they have different numerators and denominators.

To find equivalent fractions, you can multiply or divide both the numerator and the denominator by the same non-zero number.

Example 1: Showing 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6

Imagine a whole pizza cut into 2 equal slices. One slice is 1/2.

If you cut the same pizza into 4 equal slices, two slices represent the same amount as 1/2. So, 1/2 = 2/4.

If you cut the same pizza into 6 equal slices, three slices represent the same amount as 1/2. So, 1/2 = 3/6.

Therefore, 1/2, 2/4, and 3/6 are equivalent fractions.

Example 2: Showing 1/3 = 2/6 = 4/12

Consider a chocolate bar divided into 3 equal pieces. One piece is 1/3.

If you divide each of those 3 pieces into 2 smaller pieces, you now have 6 pieces in total. Two of these smaller pieces make up the same amount as 1/3. So, 1/3 = 2/6.

If you divide each of the 6 pieces into 2 smaller pieces again, you have 12 pieces in total. Four of these smaller pieces make up the same amount as 1/3. So, 1/3 = 4/12.

Therefore, 1/3, 2/6, and 4/12 are equivalent fractions.

Ordering Fractions using Symbols

We use symbols to compare fractions and show which one is greater, less, or equal.

  • > means “greater than”
  • < means “less than”
  • = means “equal to”

Examples:

  1. 1/2 = 2/4 (Because they are equivalent)
  2. 1/2 > 1/4 (Half is bigger than a quarter)
  3. 1/3 < 1/2 (A third is smaller than a half)
  4. 2/4 = 3/6 (Because both are equivalent to 1/2)
