The Cell: Plant and Animal Cell Structure
The cell is the basic unit of life. Plant and animal cells share many common features but also have distinct differences.
Common Features (Organelles)
- Cell Membrane: Controls passage of substances in and out of the cell.
- Cytoplasm: Jelly-like substance filling the cell, where most metabolic reactions occur.
- Nucleus: Contains genetic material (DNA) and controls cell activities.
- Mitochondria: Sites of cellular respiration, producing energy (ATP).
- Ribosomes: Sites of protein synthesis.
- Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): Network of membranes involved in protein and lipid synthesis and transport.

- Population: A group of individuals of the same species living in the same geographical area at the same time.
- Community: All the different populations of various species living and interacting in a particular area.
