Instructional Materials

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will use the following: Printed copy of the national anthem, Nigerian flag, Audio recording of the anthem, Flashcards with key words from the anthem, Whiteboard and marker.

Understanding the words of the national anthem helps pupils build patriotism and learn values that unite the nation.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils have been reciting the national anthem during morning assemblies and are familiar with its tune.

Lesson Content

Nigeria’s Current National Anthem

Nigeria’s official national anthem is Nigeria, We Hail Thee. It was first used at independence in 1960, replaced in 1978 and restored by the National Anthem Act 2024 on 29 May 2024. It has three stanzas. Arise, O Compatriots is the former anthem and should not be taught as the current one.

Meaning of the First Stanza

The first stanza addresses Nigeria as the country to which citizens belong. It calls people of different origins and languages to stand together, respect the nation and serve it faithfully. Its main values are unity in diversity, respect, responsible service and commitment to a shared country.

Respectful Use

Pupils should stand calmly, sing from the officially approved text and explain its ideas in their own words. The teacher should obtain the official wording and audio rather than copy an unverified social-media version. This builds on the Primary 3 lesson on the anthem as national identity.
