Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

The teacher will begin by asking pupils what songs they know that represent Nigeria. The teacher will then introduce the concept of a national anthem as a special song representing a country.

Lesson Content

What Is a National Anthem?

A national anthem is an official song that represents a country. It is sung or played at important national, school and sporting events. People show respect by standing calmly, singing correctly when appropriate and avoiding distracting behaviour.

Nigeria’s Current National Anthem

Nigeria’s official anthem is Nigeria, We Hail Thee. It was first used at independence in 1960, replaced in 1978 and restored by the National Anthem Act signed on 29 May 2024. The anthem has three stanzas.

Main Messages

The first stanza calls Nigerians of different groups and languages to stand together and serve their country.
The second presents the flag as a symbol of truth, justice and honour.
The third is a prayer for a peaceful, just and prosperous nation where no person is oppressed.

The teacher may use the officially approved text for recitation. Pupils should explain the ideas in their own words instead of copying long lyrics.
