The Sense of Sight – The Eye

The sense of sight lets us see.The eye is the organ that allows us to see.

What is the Eye?

The eye is like a camera; it gathers light and focuses it onto the retina (a special layer of cells). The retina changes the light into electrical signals sent to the brain, which interprets them as images.

Parts of the Eye

The eye is composed of several parts that work together to enable sight. These include:

Cornea: The clear,outer layer that helps focus light.
Iris: The colored part controlling how much light enters the pupil.
Pupil: The black opening letting light into the eye.
Lens: A clear structure behind the pupil that focuses light onto the retina.
Retina: A layer of cells at the back of the eye that converts light into signals.
Optic Nerve: Carries signals from the retina to the brain.
Sclera: The white outer layer of the eyeball that provides protection and support.
Vitreous Humor: The clear, gel-like substance that fills the space between the lens and the retina, helping to maintain the eye’s shape.

How Light Enters the Eye

Light enters through the cornea and pupil. the lens focuses it onto the retina. The retina creates signals sent to the brain via the optic nerve, allowing us to see.
