Meaning of Citizenship

Citizenship is the legal membership of a person in a country. A citizen enjoys certain rights and has responsibilities to the country.

Modes of Acquiring Citizenship in Nigeria

citizenship can be acquired through various means, each with its own set of requirements and processes. The following are the modes of acquiring citizenship in Nigeria:

1. By Birth: Being born in nigeria to Nigerian parents.
2. By Descent: Being born to Nigerian parents even if outside Nigeria.
3. By Registration: Applying to be a citizen, usually for spouses of Nigerians.
4. By Naturalization: Foreigners living in Nigeria for a long time can apply.
5. By Marriage: Marrying a Nigerian citizen.

Citizenship and How It Is Acquired

Citizenship is legal membership of a country, with rights, duties and protection under its laws. Under Nigeria’s constitutional framework, citizenship may be by birth, registration or naturalisation, subject to stated conditions.

Residence alone does not automatically make every person a citizen. Citizens should obey laws, respect others’ rights, protect public property and participate responsibly; government must also protect lawful rights.
