Types Of Citizenship

Citizenship defines the legal relationship between an individual and the state. It determines the rights, duties, and responsibilities of a person within a country.

Citizenship by Birth

Citizenship by birth is acquired automatically when a person is born within the territory of a country or to citizen parents as defined by law.

The following are the conditions for citizenship by birth in Nigeria:

Born in Nigeria with at least one parent or grandparent who is a Nigerian citizen.
Both parents are Nigerian citizens, regardless of place of birth.
Recognized under Nigerian law as entitled to Nigerian citizenship at birth.

Citizenship by Registration

Citizenship by registration is granted to individuals who meet certain legal requirements and apply for registration as Nigerian citizens.

These include:

Foreign spouses of Nigerian citizens.
Children of Nigerian citizens born outside Nigeria.
Persons of Nigerian descent who meet the conditions set by law.
Completion of a formal registration process at the National Identity Management Commission or relevant authority.

Citizenship by Naturalization

Naturalization allows a foreigner to become a Nigerian citizen after fulfilling legal conditions over a period of time.

They are:

Adult foreign nationals of good character who have resided in Nigeria for a specified period.
Must demonstrate knowledge of Nigerian culture, law, and language.
Submission of a formal application and approval by the President or relevant authorities.
Compliance with any other requirements stipulated by Nigerian nationality law.
