Location Of The Yoruba People

The Yoruba people are one of the major ethnic groups in Nigeria. They live mostly in the South-Western part of Nigeria.

Geographical Location

The Yoruba people live in states such as Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti. They can also be found in parts of Kwara and Kogi states.

Major Yoruba Cities

The following are some important Yoruba cities:

  1. Ibadan
  2. Lagos
  3. Abeokuta
  4. Ile-Ife
  5. Akure
Occupations of the Yoruba People

These include:

  1. Farming
  2. Trading
  3. Hunting
  4. Craft making
  5. Teaching and other professions

Locating Yoruba-Speaking Communities

Yoruba people are found mainly in south-western Nigeria, especially in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti States, with Yoruba-speaking communities also present in parts of Kwara and Kogi States and beyond Nigeria.

Location does not mean that every resident of these places has the same ethnic identity, nor that all Yoruba people live in one region. Maps, language, historical accounts and cultural evidence help pupils study settlement patterns while respecting migration and diversity.
