Herbert Macaulay

Herbert Macaulay was a surveyor, journalist and political organiser born in Lagos in 1864. He opposed unfair colonial policies, supported Nigerian political participation and helped establish the Nigerian National Democratic Party in 1923. He later helped form the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons.

Taiwo Akinkunmi

Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi was a Nigerian civil servant and student who designed the green-white-green national flag. His design won a national competition before independence and the flag was first officially hoisted on 1 October 1960. The green bands are commonly associated with Nigeria’s natural wealth, while white represents peace.

What Their Work Teaches

Macaulay used public writing and political organisation; Akinkunmi used design. Both show that service to a country can take different forms.
