Ancient Towns In Nigeria; Bonny, Daura

Besides the towns we learned about previously, Nigeria also has other ancient towns like Bonny and Daura.

Bonny

Bonny is located in Rivers State, in southern Nigeria’s Niger Delta region, near the Atlantic coast.

Daura

Daura is situated in Katsina State, in northern Nigeria, near the border with Niger Republic. It’s in the northern-central part of Katsina State.

Historical Importance of Bonny and Daura

Bonny developed in the Niger Delta and became important in regional and overseas trade, especially through its river and coastal connections. Daura is an old Hausa town associated with Hausa historical traditions and long-standing political institutions.

The two towns illustrate how geography influenced settlement: waterways supported Bonny’s commerce, while inland routes and organised communities supported Daura. Evidence about them comes from oral tradition, written records, monuments and objects. Pupils should locate Rivers State and Katsina State on a map.
