Greeting And Respecting Elders In Our Culture

Nigerian culture has many ways to greet and show respect to elders. These greetings show our cultural values.

Common Greetings

Greetings are a way of showing respect and acknowledging someone’s presence. They vary depending on the time of day:

Good morning: used in the morning.
Good afternoon: Used in the afternoon.
Good evening: Used in the evening.
Good night: Used when someone is going to bed or when leaving at night.
Welcome: Used when someone arrives at a place.

Greeting and respecting elders is important because it shows we value our culture.

Greeting with Respect

Greetings differ across Nigerian homes and cultures. People may use respectful words, a handshake, a bow, a curtsy or another accepted action. The suitable greeting depends on the family, culture, time and situation.

Respect also means listening, using polite titles and helping elders where it is safe. A child should not be forced to hug or touch anyone; a polite verbal greeting is still respectful.
