Differences Between Data and Information

The following are differences between data and information:

  • Data are raw facts and figures, while information is processed data with meaning.
  • Data may be unorganized, while information is organized and easy to understand.

  • Data can contain errors or noise, while information is usually checked and summarized.

Examples of Data and Information

The following are examples of data and the information obtained from them:

  • Data: 40, 55, 60, 75, 90; Information: Highest score is 90, lowest score is 40, average score can be calculated.
  • Data: Daily sales (₦5,000, ₦7,500, ₦6,000); Information: Total sales for three days is ₦18,500.
  • Data: Attendance numbers for a week; Information: Total attendance and number of absentees for the week.
  • Data: Names and ages of pupils; Information: List of pupils within a given age range.

Keyboard Arrangement as Data

The keyboard contains letters, numbers, and symbols arranged in keys. These keys represent data items because they are raw inputs that must be pressed and processed before any meaning appears on the screen.

The following are examples of keyboard data items:

  • Alphabet keys: A to Z
  • Number keys: 0 to 9
  • Symbol keys: +, -, /, ?, @
  • Space bar and enter key used to separate and arrange typed data

Typing Alphabets and Numbers to Produce Information

Typing is the act of entering data (letters and numbers) into the computer through the keyboard. When the typed data is arranged to form meaningful words, sentences, or results, it becomes information.

  • Data typed: C O M P U T E R; Information: The word “COMPUTER”.
  • Data typed: 2 0 2 6; Information: The number “2026” used as a year.
  • Data typed: 5 0 + 2 0; Information: The expression “50 + 20” which can be processed to get 70.
  • Data typed: A, B, C, 1, 2, 3; Information: A meaningful code or password when properly arranged.

Step 1: Introduction
