Lesson Content
Meaning and Forms of Gender Discrimination
Gender discrimination happens when boys or girls are not treated the same way. It makes people feel less critically important or left out.
Forms of Gender Discrimination
Gender discrimination can manifest in various ways, impacting opportunities and well-being. These include:
- Not allowing girls to go to school
- Giving more food or care to boys than girls
- Paying boys more than girls for the same work
- Thinking boys are stronger and smarter than girls
- Forcing girls to marry early
- Not letting boys play with dolls or do chores
- Believing girls cannot be leaders
Meaning and Forms of Gender Discrimination
Gender discrimination is unfair treatment based on a person’s sex or gender. It may appear in education, work, inheritance, leadership, household duties, sports, healthcare or harmful stereotypes about ability.
Different needs can justify reasonable support, but excluding a learner simply because “boys” or “girls” supposedly cannot do something is discrimination.
