Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Discussion, Lecture, Demonstration, Question and Answer, Visual Aids

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and engages them in a short discussion about listening to stories, asking if they enjoy stories and why. The teacher then tells a very short, simple story (e.g., about a tortoise and a snail) to get their attention.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to greetings, share their experiences with stories, and listen to the short story.
Learning Point: Pupils are prepared for the lesson and recall previous experiences with stories.

Step 2: Presentation of Topic

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Introduction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher writes the topic “ÀGBÓYÉ” on the board and explains that it means understanding what is heard or read. The teacher states the lesson objectives in simple terms.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen attentively, copy the topic into their notebooks, and understand what they are expected to learn.
Learning Point: Pupils know the topic and the goals of the lesson.

Step 3: Teacher tells a story (Sísọ Ìtàn)

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Storytelling/Narration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher reads or tells a carefully selected Yoruba story from the storybook, using appropriate intonation and showing story pictures (àwòrán ìtàn) to make it engaging. The teacher encourages pupils to listen carefully.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen with rapt attention to the story, observing the pictures shown by the teacher.
Learning Point: Pupils are exposed to a Yoruba story and practice active listening.

Step 4: Ìbéèrè lórí Ìtàn (Questions on the Story)

Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher asks pupils questions based on the story told in Step 3. The teacher uses question cards (kaadi ibeere) to guide the questions, focusing on characters, setting, key events, and the moral lesson.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils raise their hands and answer the questions orally, demonstrating their understanding of the story.
Learning Point: Pupils develop the ability to recall details and answer questions from a story.

Step 5: Explanation of Kókó tí ó Súyọ nínú Ìtàn (Main Points from the Story)

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Guidance
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains what “kókó tí ó súyọ nínú ìtàn” means, emphasizing that these are the most important parts of the story. The teacher then guides the pupils to identify some main points from the story just told, writing them briefly on the board.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the explanation and participate in identifying and stating the main points, copying them from the board.
Learning Point: Pupils learn how to identify and state the main points of a story.

Step 6: Pupils practice stating main points

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher encourages more pupils to state other main points they identified from the story. The teacher provides feedback and corrects any misconceptions.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils volunteer to state additional main points, building on the teacher’s guidance and peer contributions.
Learning Point: Pupils practice and improve their ability to extract and verbalize main points from a narrative.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. Kí ni Àgbóyé nínú èdè Yoruba? (What is Comprehension in Yoruba language?)
  2. Ṣàlàyé Sísọ ìtàn nínú ẹkọ Àgbóyé. (Explain Storytelling in the Comprehension lesson.)
  3. Darukọ àwọn kókó pàtàkì méjì tí ó súyọ nínú ìtàn tí a kà lónìí. (Mention two main points that emerged from the story we read today.)
  4. Kí ló ń jẹ́ kí a dáhùn ìbéèrè lórí ìtàn? (What enables us to answer questions about a story?)

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.

Step 8: Conclusion

Time: 3 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summarization/Assignment
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher summarizes the lesson, reiterating the importance of listening carefully to stories, answering questions, and identifying main points. The teacher gives homework, asking pupils to ask their parents to tell them a Yoruba story and write down two main points from it.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the summary and copy the homework into their notebooks.
Learning Point: Pupils consolidate their learning and are given tasks to reinforce understanding.

Lesson Keywords

  • Àgbóyé – Understanding or comprehension of what is heard or read.
  • Ìtàn – A story or narrative.
  • Kókó – Main points or key aspects of something.
  • Ìbéèrè – Questions.

Differentiation

For pupils who are struggling, the teacher will provide simpler stories or re-tell parts of the story more slowly, asking direct questions. For advanced learners, the teacher will encourage them to retell the story in their own words or discuss potential alternative endings or deeper moral implications.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Ensure the chosen story is appropriate for the age group and has clear characters, events, and a discernible moral. Encourage active participation from all pupils, providing positive reinforcement. Pay attention to pupils’ Yoruba pronunciation and grammar when they answer questions or state main points.
