Class: Primary 5
Term: 2nd Term
Subject: Basic Science and Technology
Curriculum Theme: Basic Technology
Previous Lesson:
Topic: Definition and Concept of Energy
Content/Learning Area: Definition of Energy, Concept of Energy
Time Allocation: 40 minutes

performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Cognitive Domain: Define energy and explain the concept of energy.
  • Affective Domain: Appreciate the importance of energy in daily activities.
  • Psychomotor Domain: Identify and demonstrate examples of energy in action.
  • Social Domain: Collaborate in discussing how energy is used in their surroundings.

Reference Materials

The following resources were used in planning this lesson:

Instructional Materials

to deliver this lesson, the teacher will use the following materials:

  • Flashcards with examples of energy forms.
  • A simple pendulum (for kinetic energy demonstration).
  • A torchlight (for light energy demonstration).
  • A chart showing energy transformations.

Rationale for the Lesson

Understanding energy is basic as it powers all activities in our daily lives, from moving objects to producing light and heat. This lesson builds a foundation for more advanced scientific concepts.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils have learned about work and force in the previous lesson and can relate this knowledge to how energy is used to perform tasks.

Lesson Content

Definition and Concept of energy

Energy is the ability to do work. This means that energy is what makes things happen or move. Such as, when you play, your body uses energy to jump, run, or clap.

Concept of Energy:

Energy is a fundamental concept in science.

The following are key concepts related to energy:

  1. Energy can exist in various forms such as heat, light, sound, electrical, and mechanical energy.
  2. energy is required to move objects from one place to another.
  3. Energy can be transformed from one form to another (e.g.,electrical energy to light energy).
  4. Energy is necessary for living organisms to grow and function.
  5. Renewable and non-renewable energy sources power human activities.
  6. Energy is conserved; it cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.
  7. Energy is essential for industries to manufacture goods and provide services.
  8. Energy is vital for transportation, powering vehicles and enabling movement of people and goods.

Teaching Methods

To deliver this lesson,‌ ⁤the teacher will⁤ adopt⁤ the following methods: Explanation,Demonstration,Discussion,Interactive Teaching,Group Activity.

Instructional Procedures

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction (Set Induction)

Time: 5 mins
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: Ask pupils how they power devices like TVs or phones.
Pupils’ Activity: Respond actively with examples like batteries or electricity.

Step 2: Definition of energy

Time: 5 mins
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: Define energy and write it on the board.
Pupils’ Activity: Copy the definition.

Step 3: Concepts of Energy

Time: 10 mins
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: Show examples of energy forms using the pendulum and torchlight.
Pupils’ Activity: Observe and discuss the examples shown.

Step 4: Class Discussion

Time: 8 mins
Teaching Skill: Guided discussion
Teacher’s Activity: Lead pupils to discuss the importance of energy in their environment.
pupils’ Activity: Share ideas in groups.

Step 5: Note-Taking

Time: 5 mins
teaching Skill: Dictation
Teacher’s Activity: Dictate the note on energy.
Pupils’ Activity: Copy the note into their notebooks.

Step 6: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 mins
Teaching Skill: Oral questioning
Teacher’s Activity: Ask questions related to energy and its forms.
Pupils’ Activity: Answer questions orally.

Objective-aligned checks:

  1. Define energy and explain the concept of energy.
  2. Identify and demonstrate examples of energy in action.

Step 7: Conclusion

Time: 2 mins
Teaching Skill: Recap
Teacher’s activity: Summarize the lesson on energy.
Pupils’ Activity: Listen attentively.

Lesson Keywords

  • Energy – The ability to do work.
  • Kinetic Energy – Energy of motion.
  • Potential energy – Stored energy.
  • Transformation – Changing from one form to another.
  • Renewable Energy – Energy from natural sources that replenish.
  • Non-Renewable Energy – Energy from finite sources that cannot be replenished.

Lesson Evaluation

To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:

  1. Define energy.
  2. List five forms of energy.
  3. Explain how energy is important in daily life.
  4. Mention two examples of energy transformation.
  5. Describe one way energy is used in their home.

Assignment/Homework

  1. List five activities you do every day that require energy.
  2. Explain the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
  3. Give three examples of energy transformations you observe in your environment.

Differentiation

  • For slower learners: Provide simplified definitions and focus on basic examples.
  • For advanced learners: Challenge them to research different types of renewable energy and their applications.
  • For visual/auditory/kinesthetic learners: Use visual aids, demonstrations, and hands-on activities to reinforce learning.

Note for Teachers

Use real-life examples and demonstrations to make the concept of energy relatable to the pupils. Encourage active participation during discussions and evaluation. Happy teaching!
