Types of National Honours Awards: CFR & GCON

Nigeria gives national honours to recognize outstanding contributions. These awards show appreciation for service to the nation.

The following are the types of national Honours Awards:

  1. CFR (Commander of the order of the Federal Republic): Awarded for significant contributions to Nigeria’s progress. Professor Wole soyinka is a notable example.
  2. GCON (grand Commander of the Order of the Niger): A high award for major contributions to the nation.Aliko Dangote is a recipient.

CFR and GCON

CFR means Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic, while GCON means Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger. They belong to different orders, so the shared word “Commander” does not make them the same rank.

Use a chart showing the full abbreviation and order. Avoid claiming that every holder served in one profession; honours may recognise service in different areas of national life.
