Work

Work refers to the act of using force to move an object through a distance. If no movement occurs, work is not done.

The following are conditions for work to be done:

Energy

Energy is the ability or capacity to do work or cause change. Every activity requires energy to take place.

These include the main forms of energy:

  1. Heat energy
  2. Light energy
  3. Sound energy
  4. Kinetic energy
  5. Potential energy
  6. Electrical energy
  7. Chemical energy

Power

Power is the rate at which work is done or how quickly energy is used over time.

The following are examples of power in use:

  1. A person running faster uses more power than walking.
  2. An electric kettle boiling water quickly.
  3. A machine lifting heavy loads in a short time.

Concept of Work, Energy and Power

These three concepts are related because work requires energy, and power measures how fast the work is done.

Examples include:

  1. Lifting a bucket requires energy and work is done.
  2. A generator uses fuel energy to produce power.
  3. Pushing a wheelbarrow requires work and energy, while speed determines power.
