Matter exists in three states, and the particles behave differently in each state due to differences in spacing and motion.
The following are the behaviours of particles in various states of matter:

  1. Solids have closely packed particles that vibrate in fixed positions.
  2. Liquids have particles that move freely but remain close together.
  3. Gases have widely spaced particles that move very fast in all directions.
Explanation of Common Phenomena Using Kinetic Theory

Several everyday events can be understood from particle motion and energy changes.
The following are common phenomena explained using kinetic theory:

  1. Diffusion of perfume in a room happens because gas particles move freely and spread out quickly.
  2. Expansion of metals when heated occurs because particles gain energy and move faster.
  3. Evaporation of water happens because faster-moving particles escape into the air.
