Fractions

Multiplication of Fractions

When multiplying fractions, the numerator is multiplied by the numerator and the denominator is multiplied by the denominator.

The following are the steps in multiplying fractions:

  1. Multiply the numerators.
  2. Multiply the denominators.
  3. Simplify the fraction to the lowest terms if necessary.

Examples include:
23×45=815frac{2}{3} times frac{4}{5} = frac{8}{15}
56×37=1542=514frac{5}{6} times frac{3}{7} = frac{15}{42} = frac{5}{14}

Division of Fractions

Dividing fractions means multiplying the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction.

The following are the steps in dividing fractions:

  1. Write the reciprocal (invert) of the divisor fraction.
  2. Multiply the first fraction by this reciprocal.
  3. Simplify the answer where possible.

Examples include:
34÷25=34×52=158=178frac{3}{4} div frac{2}{5} = frac{3}{4} times frac{5}{2} = frac{15}{8} = 1frac{7}{8}
79÷1415=79×1514=105126=56frac{7}{9} div frac{14}{15} = frac{7}{9} times frac{15}{14} = frac{105}{126} = frac{5}{6}

Prime Numbers

A prime number is a number greater than 1 that has only two factors, 1 and itself.

Examples are:
2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, etc.

The following are the properties of prime numbers:

  1. They have exactly two factors.
  2. The first prime number is 2, which is also the only even prime.
  3. All other even numbers greater than 2 are not prime.
Factors

A factor of a number is a whole number that divides the given number exactly without a remainder.

The following are examples of factors:

  1. Factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12.
  2. Factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18.
  3. Factors of 20 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20.

Factors are important in multiplication, division, and simplification of fractions.
