Reference Materials

The following resources were used in planning this lesson:

  • 9 Years Basic Education Curriculum
  • Lagos State Unified Scheme of work for Junior Secondary Schools
  • ThoughtCo – Understanding Very Big Numbers
  • Relevant Textbooks

Instructional Materials

The teacher will teach this lesson with the aid of:

  • Place value chart
  • Flash cards with large numbers written on them
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Number line charts
  • Projector or chart showing millions, billions, and trillions

Rationale for the Lesson

This lesson enables pupils to understand how to count, read, and write very large numbers accurately, which is essential for solving problems in mathematics and real-life financial contexts.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils are already familiar with counting, reading, and writing numbers up to thousands and have worked with simple place value systems.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

Whole Numbers Counting and Writing

Millions

Millions come after hundreds of thousands in the place value system. One million is written as 1,000,000, which is a 1 followed by six zeros.

The following are examples of numbers in millions:

  1. 2,000,000 (Two million)
  2. 15,000,000 (Fifteen million)
  3. 250,000,000 (Two hundred and fifty million)

Billions

A billion is equal to one thousand millions. It is written as 1,000,000,000, which is a 1 followed by nine zeros.

Examples include:

  1. 3,000,000,000 (Three billion)
  2. 45,000,000,000 (Forty-five billion)
  3. 120,000,000,000 (One hundred and twenty billion)

Trillions

A trillion is one thousand billions. It is written as 1,000,000,000,000, which is a 1 followed by twelve zeros.

Examples include:

  1. 7,000,000,000,000 (Seven trillion)
  2. 19,000,000,000,000 (Nineteen trillion)
  3. 250,000,000,000,000 (Two hundred and fifty trillion)

Reading and Writing Large Numbers

Large numbers are read in groups of three digits starting from the right. Each group is given a name such as thousands, millions, billions, or trillions.

The following are examples of reading large numbers:

  1. 3,245,000 is read as “Three million, two hundred and forty-five thousand.”
  2. 18,560,000,000 is read as “Eighteen billion, five hundred and sixty million.”
  3. 432,700,000,000,000 is read as “Four hundred and thirty-two trillion, seven hundred billion.”

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques:

Discussion, Lecture, Explanation, Demonstration, Group Work, Question and Answer, Visual Aids

Instructional Procedures

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher reviews previous knowledge of place values up to thousands and asks pupils to mention examples.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils recall and respond with examples of numbers in thousands.
Learning Point: Pupils are prepared for learning about larger numbers.

Step 2: Millions

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher explains millions using a place value chart and gives examples of numbers in millions.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the chart and write examples of numbers in millions.
Learning Point: Pupils understand how millions are written and read.

Step 3: Billions

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher explains billions with examples and shows the relationship between millions and billions.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, repeat examples, and write down billions in figures and words.
Learning Point: Pupils learn how billions are represented in the place value system.

Step 4: Trillions and Reading Large Numbers

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher explains trillions, demonstrates reading large numbers by grouping digits into threes, and writes examples on the board.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils practice reading and writing numbers in trillions.
Learning Point: Pupils are able to read and write very large numbers correctly.

Step 5: Note-Taking

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher dictates or writes the board summary for pupils to copy.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils write notes into their exercise books.
Learning Point: Pupils have a written record of the lesson content.

Step 6: Evaluation/Review

Time: 3 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. Write 10 million in figures.
  2. How many zeros are there in one billion?
  3. Read the number 8,420,000,000 aloud.
  4. Write in words: 230,000,000,000,000.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond orally and in writing.
Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of large numbers.

Step 7: Conclusion

Time: 2 minutes
Teaching Skill: Reinforcement
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher summarizes the lesson and emphasizes accuracy in reading and writing large numbers.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen and ask questions where necessary.
Learning Point: Pupils appreciate the use of large numbers in daily life and mathematics.

Home Task: Solve three new exercises on Whole Numbers Counting And Writing. Show each step and check each answer.

Lesson Keywords

  • Place Value – the value a digit has because of its position in a number
  • Million – one thousand thousands or 1,000,000
  • Billion – one thousand millions or 1,000,000,000
  • Trillion – one thousand billions or 1,000,000,000,000
  • Grouping – arranging digits in threes to read large numbers easily

Differentiation

Teacher simplifies content with charts and place value tables for slower learners while advanced pupils attempt higher-value examples and lead group discussions.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Emphasize accuracy in writing large numbers to avoid confusion. Use practical examples such as population, money, and national statistics to make the lesson relevant.
