Rationale for the Lesson

Properties of Figures

Rectangle

A rectangle is a four-sided figure with opposite sides equal and all angles equal to 90°.
The following are the properties of a rectangle:

  1. It has four sides and four right angles.
  2. Opposite sides are equal and parallel.
  3. Diagonals are equal and bisect each other.
  4. Each diagonal divides the rectangle into two congruent triangles.

Example:
If the length of a rectangle is 8 cm and its breadth is 4 cm:
Perimeter = 2 × (L + B) = 2 × (8 + 4) = 24 cm
Area = L × B = 8 × 4 = 32 cm²

Square

A square is a four-sided figure with all sides equal and all angles 90°.
The following are the properties of a square:

  1. All sides are equal in length.
  2. All interior angles are right angles.
  3. Opposite sides are parallel.
  4. Diagonals are equal and bisect each other at right angles.
  5. Each diagonal divides the square into two isosceles right triangles.

Example:
If the side of a square is 5 cm:
Perimeter = 4 × side = 4 × 5 = 20 cm
Area = side² = 5² = 25 cm²

Isosceles Triangle

An isosceles triangle has two sides equal and two angles equal.
The following are the properties of an isosceles triangle:

  1. Two sides are equal in length.
  2. Angles opposite the equal sides are equal.
  3. It has one line of symmetry.

Example:
If an isosceles triangle has equal sides of 6 cm and a base of 8 cm, the equal angles are the same.

Equilateral Triangle

An equilateral triangle has all three sides and angles equal.
The following are the properties of an equilateral triangle:

  1. All sides are equal in length.
  2. Each angle measures 60°.
  3. It has three lines of symmetry.

Example:
If each side is 4 cm:
Perimeter = 3 × 4 = 12 cm

Circle

A circle is a plane figure with all points equidistant from a fixed point called the center.
The following are the properties of a circle:

  1. It has no sides or angles.
  2. The distance from the center to any point on the circle is the radius.
  3. The line passing through the center and touching both sides of the circle is the diameter.
  4. The circumference is the distance around the circle.
  5. Diameter = 2 × Radius.

Example:
If the radius of a circle is 7 cm:
Diameter = 2 × 7 = 14 cm
Circumference = 2πr = 2 × 22/7 × 7 = 44 cm
