Understanding Place Value for Large Numbers

Numbers are grouped in threes from the right, with each group having a specific name: units, thousands, millions, billions, and trillions. Commas are used to separate these groups to make numbers easier to read.

Counting and Reading Numbers in Millions

Numbers in millions have seven, eight, or nine digits. We read the number in the millions period, followed by “million”, then the number in the thousands period, followed by “thousand”, and finally the number in the units period.

  2. (15,000,000) – Fifteen million
  3. (234,567,890) – Two hundred and thirty-four million, five hundred and sixty-seven thousand, eight hundred and ninety

Counting and Reading Numbers in Billions

Numbers in billions have ten, eleven, or twelve digits. We read the number in the billions period, followed by “billion”, then the millions, thousands, and units periods as before.

  1. (1,000,000,000) – One billion
  2. (20,000,000,000) – Twenty billion
  3. (543,210,987,654) – Five hundred and forty-three billion, two hundred and ten million, nine hundred and eighty-seven thousand, six hundred and fifty-four

Counting and Reading Numbers in Trillions

Numbers in trillions have thirteen, fourteen, or fifteen digits. We read the number in the trillions period, followed by “trillion”, then the billions, millions, thousands, and units periods.

  1. (1,000,000,000,000) – One trillion
  2. (7,000,000,000,000) – Seven trillion
  3. (987,654,321,098,765) – Nine hundred and eighty-seven trillion, six hundred and fifty-four billion, three hundred and twenty-one million, ninety-eight thousand, seven hundred and sixty-five

Writing Large Numbers in Figures

To write large numbers in figures, identify the period (trillions, billions, millions, thousands, units) and write the digits for each period, separating them with commas.

  1. Question: Write “Three hundred and fifty-six million, one hundred and twenty-three thousand, four hundred and five” in figures.
