Rationale for the Lesson
Understanding food processing is crucial for appreciating the journey of food from raw ingredients to our tables. This knowledge promotes healthy eating habits and fosters an understanding of food safety and preservation techniques.
Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge
Pupils are familiar with diffrent types of food and where they come from.
Lesson Content
what is Food Processing?
Food processing is changing raw ingredients into finished food products. We do this to make food safer, tastier, and last longer.Food processing helps us enjoy food for a longer time and makes it safer to eat.
Examples of Food Processing
There are many ways to process food. The following are some examples:
- canning fruits and vegetables
- Drying fish and meat
- Pasteurizing milk
- Freezing fruits and vegetables
- Smoking meat and fish
- fermenting grains for ogi
- Milling grains into flour
Purposes and Methods of Food Processing
Food processing changes raw food into a form that is safer, easier to store, easier to cook or ready to eat. Simple methods include washing, sorting, peeling, grinding, drying, fermenting, cooking and packaging. Cassava may be processed into garri, while grains may be milled into flour.
Processing is different from preservation, although one method may do both. Clean water, clean equipment, safe temperatures and protection from pests are essential. Spoiled raw materials should not be disguised or made safe merely by adding flavouring.
