Materials For Making Cleaning Agents: Local Abrasives
Abrasives are rough materials that are used to clean or scrub things to remove dirt. They help make dirty surfaces clean again.
Local Materials Used as Abrasives
Some materials we use at home or in our environment can definitely help clean things very well. These materials are easy to find.
The following are local materials used to produce abrasives:
- Ash
- Sand
- Broken palm kernel shell
- Coconut husk
- Grated maize cob
- Crushed charcoal
- Grated sponge plant (sponge gourd)
- Clay
- Loofah
- Groundnut Shells
Local Abrasives and Cleaning Materials
An abrasive removes dirt by rubbing. Traditional or locally available examples may include fine clean sand, ash or powdered plant material, but suitability depends on the surface and hygiene purpose. Commercial scouring powder and pads are manufactured alternatives.
Abrasives can scratch surfaces and must not contaminate food. Test a small area, use gloves where advised, keep every product labelled and never mix unknown cleaning chemicals.
