  • Charts showing different kobo denominations.
  • Whiteboard and markers.

Rationale for the Lesson

Understanding money is important for pupils because it helps them manage their personal finances and make simple transactions in their daily lives. This lesson enables pupils to recognize and use kobo denominations, which are fundamental for basic financial literacy.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils can count numbers up to 100 and have a basic understanding of addition and subtraction of single-digit numbers.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

Money

The Concept of Kobo

Kobo is a unit of Nigerian currency, usually in coin form. It is a smaller unit compared to Naira.

The following are common kobo denominations:

  • 50 kobo (50k)
  • 25 kobo (25k)
  • 10 kobo (10k)
  • 5 kobo (5k)
  • 1 kobo (1k)

NOTE: 100 kobo (100k) makes 1 Naira (N1).

Simple Addition of Money (Kobo)

Adding money means putting amounts together to find a total. We add kobo just like we add regular numbers.

Examples:

Example 1: Add 10k and 5k.

  • Step 1: Write the numbers vertically: 10k
  • Step 2: Add the kobo amounts: + 5k
  • Step 3: Write the total: 15k

Example 2: Add 25k and 25k.

  • Step 1: Write the numbers vertically: 25k
  • Step 2: Add the kobo amounts: + 25k
  • Step 3: Write the total: 50k

Simple Subtraction of Money (Kobo)

Subtracting money means taking one amount away from another to find the difference. We subtract kobo just like we subtract regular numbers.

Examples:

Example 1: Subtract 5k from 15k.

  • Step 1: Write the numbers vertically: 15k
  • Step 2: Subtract the kobo amounts: – 5k
  • Step 3: Write the remainder: 10k

Example 2: Subtract 10k from 50k.

  • Step 1: Write the numbers vertically: 50k
  • Step 2: Subtract the kobo amounts: – 10k
  • Step 3: Write the remainder: 40k

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Discussion, Lecture, Demonstration, Question and Answer, Visual Aids

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils, reviews the previous lesson on counting, and asks pupils if they have seen money before, showing some real kobo coins.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to greetings, recall the previous lesson, and identify the kobo coins shown by the teacher.
Learning Point: Pupils are prepared for the new lesson on money.

Step 2: Identifying Kobo Denominations

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Identification
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher displays various kobo coins (50k, 25k, 10k, 5k, 1k) or charts showing them. The teacher calls out the name of each denomination and asks pupils to repeat.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the coins/charts and repeat the names of the denominations after the teacher.
Learning Point: Pupils learn to recognize different kobo denominations.

Step 3: Understanding Value of Kobo

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains that each kobo coin has a different value and how 100 kobo makes one Naira. The teacher asks simple questions like “Which coin is bigger, 50k or 10k?”
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the explanation and answer the teacher’s questions.
Learning Point: Pupils begin to understand the value of different kobo denominations.

Step 4: Introduction to Simple Addition of Money

Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains what addition means in the context of money using kobo coins. The teacher demonstrates simple addition problems on the board using the examples from the board summary.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils pay attention to the teacher’s explanation and observe the examples on the board.
Learning Point: Pupils learn how to add simple kobo amounts.

Step 5: Practice Addition of Money

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher gives pupils simple addition problems involving kobo to solve in their notebooks or orally, providing guidance as needed.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils solve the given addition problems individually or in small groups.
Learning Point: Pupils practice and reinforce their understanding of adding kobo.

Step 6: Introduction to Simple Subtraction of Money

Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains what subtraction means in the context of money using kobo coins. The teacher demonstrates simple subtraction problems on the board using the examples from the board summary.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the teacher’s explanation and observe the examples on the board.
Learning Point: Pupils learn how to subtract simple kobo amounts.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. Mention two kobo denominations you know.
  2. If you have 10k and your friend gives you 5k, how much do you have in total?
  3. You have 20k and you spend 10k. How much kobo do you have left?
  4. What is the total of 25k and 25k?

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.

Step 8: Conclusion

Time: 1 minute
Teaching Skill: Summarization
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher summarizes the lesson by reminding pupils about the different kobo denominations and how to perform simple addition and subtraction with them. The teacher gives homework.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the summary and copy the homework.
Learning Point: Pupils have a clear understanding of the lesson and know what to practice.

Home Task: Solve two new exercises on Money. Show each step and check each answer.

Lesson Keywords

  • Money – What we use to buy things.
  • Kobo – A small unit of Nigerian money.
  • Denominations – Different values of money, like 50k or 10k.
  • Addition – Putting numbers or amounts together.
  • Subtraction – Taking one number or amount away from another.

Differentiation

For struggling learners, the teacher will use more visual aids and real kobo coins for hands-on practice, focusing only on 1k, 5k, and 10k. For advanced learners, the teacher will introduce slightly more complex addition and subtraction problems, perhaps involving three kobo amounts or sums up to 100k.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Ensure that real kobo coins or clear pictures are available for pupils to see and touch, as this aids concrete understanding for Primary 1 pupils. Keep the addition and subtraction problems very simple and within the pupils’ counting range to build confidence. Encourage pupils to use simple counting strategies to solve problems.
