Whole Number 0 (Zero)

Meaning of Zero

Zero (0) means nothing. It means no object or no quantity. When you have nothing left, you have zero.

Reading and Writing Zero

The symbol for zero is ‘0’. We read it as “zero”.

To write zero, we make a big oval shape, starting from the top, going round and joining back at the top.

Zero as an Empty Set

An empty set or empty group means there are no items inside. For example:

  1. A bag with no sweets inside is an empty bag. It has zero sweets.
  2. A plate with no biscuits is an empty plate. It has zero biscuits.
  3. A hand with no fingers raised is showing zero fingers.

Counting Down to Zero

We can count down to zero by removing objects one by one until none are left. For example:

  1. If you have 3 apples and eat 3, you are left with 0 apples.
  2. If there are 2 birds on a tree and both fly away, there are 0 birds left.

Position of Zero on a Number Line

Zero (0) comes before 1 on a number line. It is the starting point for positive numbers.

A simple number line looks like this:

0 — 1 — 2 — 3 — 4 — 5
