Capacity

What is Capacity?

Capacity is the amount of liquid or substance a container can hold. We use capacity to measure how much water, juice, or sand fits inside a bottle, cup, or bucket.

Comparing Capacity of Containers

To compare capacity, we look at which container holds more or less. A big container holds more, and a small container holds less.

The following are ways to compare containers:

  • Fill one container and pour its content into another to see which is bigger or smaller.
  • Visually observe and estimate which container looks like it can hold more.

Ordering Capacity of Containers

Ordering capacity means arranging containers from the one that holds the least to the one that holds the most, or from the one that holds the most to the one that holds the least.

  • Ascending Order: From smallest capacity to largest capacity.
  • Descending Order: From largest capacity to smallest capacity.

Units of Capacity

The standard unit for measuring capacity is the Litre (L).

  • Smaller amounts can be measured in millilitres (mL), but for Primary 1, we focus on Litre.
  • We can also use non-standard units like cups or spoons to compare, but Litre is standard.

Simple Addition and Subtraction of Capacity

We can add and subtract capacities just like we add and subtract numbers, but we must remember to include the unit (Litre).

Worked Examples:

Example 1: Addition

A jug has 9 L of water, and another jug has 8 L of water. How much water is there in total?

  • Step 1: Identify the given capacities: 9 L and 8 L.
  • Step 2: Add the numbers: 9 + 8 = 17.
  • Step 3: Write the answer with the unit: 17 L.
  • Answer: There is 17 L of water in total.

Example 2: Subtraction

A bucket has 15 L of juice. If 7 L of juice is used, how much juice is left?

  • Step 1: Identify the total capacity and the amount used: 15 L and 7 L.
