Lesson Content
Conduct of Election in Nigeria
Conducting elections in Nigeria is the organized process where citizens choose their leaders fairly and democratically. This ensures everyone can participate in decision-making. Key steps include:
- Registration of Voters: Citizens of voting age register with the electoral commission to participate.
- Campaign Period: Political parties and candidates share their ideas and plans, seeking votes.
- voting and Collation: Registered voters cast votes on election day; votes are counted and results collated.
- Inauguration of Elected Leaders: Winners are sworn in to begin their duties, completing the process.
How Elections Are Conducted
An election process includes voter registration, nomination of candidates, campaigns under rules, accreditation, secret voting, counting, collation, declaration of results and lawful resolution of disputes. INEC conducts federal and state elections, while other bodies handle some local elections according to law.
A credible election needs secrecy of the ballot, accurate records, equal application of rules, security without intimidation and transparent counting. Pupils should not memorise a procedure from an outdated manual as if it can never change.
