WHOLE NUMBERS: MILLIONS AND BILLIONS

Counting in Millions and Billions

Numbers can be very large. After thousands, we have millions, and after millions, we have billions. Each group of three digits forms a period (ones, thousands, millions, billions).

For example:

  • 1,000,000 is one million.
  • 1,000,000,000 is one billion.
  • We count by adding one to the previous number: 1, 2, 3, …, 999,999,999, 1,000,000,000, and so on, up to tens of billions.

Writing and Reading Numbers in Figures (Millions and Billions)

To write large numbers in figures, we group the digits in threes from the right, separating each group with a comma or space. Each group represents a period (ones, thousands, millions, billions).

Examples:

  1. Six million, three hundred thousand, five hundred and twelve is written as 6,300,512.
  2. Twenty-five billion, eighty million, two hundred thousand, one hundred and fifty is written as 25,080,200,150.

Writing and Reading Numbers in Words (Millions and Billions)

To read numbers in words, we read each group of three digits as if it were a separate number, followed by the name of its period (billion, million, thousand), except for the ones period.

Examples:

  1. Read 7,450,900:
    • Read the first group (7) as “Seven”.
    • Identify its period (Millions).
    • Read the second group (450) as “Four hundred and fifty”.
    • Identify its period (Thousands).
    • Read the last group (900) as “Nine hundred”.
    • So, 7,450,900 is “Seven million, four hundred and fifty thousand, nine hundred”.
  2. Read 13,005,020,008:
    • Read the first group (13) as “Thirteen”.
    • Identify its period (Billions).
    • Read the second group (005) as “Five”. (The leading zeros are not read, so it’s “Five million”)
    • Read the third group (020) as “Twenty”. (The leading zero is not read, so it’s “Twenty thousand”)
    • Read the last group (008) as “Eight”.
    • So, 13,005,020,008 is “Thirteen billion, five million, twenty thousand and eight”.

Place Value of Millions and Billions

The place value of a digit is its position in a number, which determines its value. A place value chart helps to identify this.

To find the place value of a digit:

Example 1: Find the place value of 5 in 12,345,678,901.

  • Step 1: Write the number in a place value chart or count positions from the right.
  • Step 2: Starting from the right: 1 (ones), 0 (tens), 9 (hundreds), 8 (thousands), 7 (ten thousands), 6 (hundred thousands), 5 (millions).
  • Answer: The place value of 5 is Millions.

To find the value of a digit:

Example 2: Find the value of 3 in 23,456,789.

  • Step 1: Identify the place value of the digit. The place value of 3 is Millions.
  • Step 2: Multiply the digit by its place value. Value = 3 x 1,000,000.
  • Answer: The value of 3 is 3,000,000 (Three Million).

Quantitative Reasoning on Millions and Billions

Quantitative reasoning involves solving problems using numerical patterns, relationships, and logical thinking with large numbers.

Examples:

  1. Complete the sequence: 1,000,000; 2,000,000; 3,000,000; _____; _____.
    • Solution: Each number increases by 1,000,000. So the next numbers are 4,000,000 and 5,000,000.
  2. Which number is larger: 5,200,000,000 or 5,020,000,000?
    • Solution: Compare the digits from left to right. The billions digit is 5 for both. The hundred millions digit is 2 for the first number and 0 for the second. Since 2 is greater than 0, 5,200,000,000 is larger.
