Natural Hazards, Disasters and Preparedness

A natural hazard is a potentially harmful event such as flood, drought, severe storm, landslide or earthquake. It becomes a disaster when it causes serious damage and overwhelms the affected community’s ability to cope.

Risk is reduced through warnings, clear drains, safe buildings, land-use planning, evacuation routes and emergency supplies. Pupils should follow official instructions, move to the designated safe place and never enter floodwater or a damaged building.
