Maintaining soil fertility is important for growing healthy crops. One way to maintain soil fertility is by adding fertilizer to the soil. Fertilizers provide nutrients that crops need to grow.
Types of fertilizers can be broadly categorized based on their origin and composition:
These include:
- Inorganic Fertilizers: These are chemical fertilizers like NPK and urea. they supply nitrogen,phosphorus,and potassium to the soil. Examples include ammonium sulfate, superphosphate, and potassium chloride.
- Organic Fertilizers: These include natural materials like cow dung and poultry droppings. They improve soil structure and fertility over time. Other examples are compost, bone meal, and green manure.
- Application: Fertilizers are added to the soil in the right amounts to avoid damaging crops. Methods include broadcasting, side-dressing, and foliar application.
Using Fertiliser Responsibly
Fertiliser supplies plant nutrients. Organic sources include compost and well-prepared manure; inorganic fertilisers contain measured nutrients in concentrated form. The correct type and amount depend on the crop and soil.
Too much fertiliser can burn plants and pollute water. Apply according to instructions, keep it away from children and food, avoid bare-hand contact and wash after supervised use. Fertiliser adds nutrients but does not replace erosion control or organic matter.
