Soil fertility refers to the ability of soil to provide all the necessary nutrients for healthy plant growth. Fertile soil is crucial for farming.

Features of a Fertile Soil:

Fertile soil exhibits several key characteristics that support plant growth. These include:

  1. Contains sufficient nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
  2. Has good water retention capacity.
  3. Has a balanced pH, neither too acidic nor too alkaline.
  4. Is rich in organic matter like humus.
  5. Supports healthy root growth due to good structure and aeration.

What Makes Soil Fertile

Soil fertility is the ability of soil to supply crops with nutrients, water, air and suitable conditions for root growth. Fertile soil usually contains available plant nutrients, organic matter, useful organisms and a structure that drains excess water but holds enough moisture.

Dark colour alone does not prove fertility. A soil test, crop growth and local observation give better evidence. Erosion, continuous cropping, burning and nutrient removal can reduce fertility.
